I have taken, with permission, the two initial pages from the book compiled by Shri Girish Chandra Pandey (of Guthanagad गुथाणागाड़). These give the family tree as it starts from Mahti Pandey. You will see the first 11 generations of Pan's Pandeys starting from Mahti Pandey: Mahati>Nri Sinh>Herambh>Shuk Dev>Shubhankar>Rishabh Dev>Satya Dev>Musa Dev>Janardan>Jay Datt>Maha Dev Maha Dev had five sons and they make the different clans of Pan's Pandeys. The generations after Maha Dev have been charted till the latest generation in subsequent posts of this blog.

Shri Girish Chandra Pandey (s/o Late Shri Bal Mukund) has shared a family tree going back to many generations (from approximately 1600 AD) in print form. Pages of this book are being scanned and linked at the end of this post. The entries will later be put in a database and will be shared either through a dynamic link and query or (if that is not doable for us) as a static document. In the meantime, Pan's biradars and relatives are being requested to share the details that they know, through a Google form. Pan is about 500m from the  motorable road while Daingun is about 750m. [under construction] Most villages in Uttarakhand suffer from migration. Villages that are not well connected with local towns have borne the brunt of migration to an extent that life there has become unsustainable. A large number of factors have contributed to this and these have been documented by government agencies and sociologists. So, this article does not seek to go into the possible reasons of migration but draws from actual case studies. During 1950's, there were about 35 families living in the twin-villages. Families used to be big (on an average, 6-8 persons in a family), usually comprising three generations. Those working outside would also keep visiting the village on major festivals and family/ village events. [to be expanded] This article will also undergo changes as and when more insights are contributed.

[under construction] Pan's residents are Pandey, a surname that is popular in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra. However, they are not always inter-related except for being Bhahmins. Some of them have adopted the Pande पांडे variant and others, Pandey पांडेय. Writing one's surname as Pandey in English and  पांडे in Hindi is also a common practice. The new variants of the surname are derived from Sanskrit and early Hindi पाण्डे  or पाण्डेय, especially under the influence of English. In fact, till 1970's, these were in wide use. Pande is a common surname among Brahmins in north and central India. In Maharashtra, many surnames end with this suffix. In Nepal, this surname is also attached with a Kshatriya clan. In itself, Pande may not have a significance in tracing the origin of a clan of Brahmins, as this surname seems to have been given to / adopted by Brahmins who were pandits पण्डित (wise men), had paand पाण्ड (a small piece of land) or travelled here and t...

This blog will, in due course of time, have photos, videos, contacts and other information about Village Pan and its resident/ non-resident people. Pan is a small village, situated in Uttarakhand>Distt Almora>Tehsil Ranikhet. It is 5km from Dwarahat on two sides of Dwarahat-Chaukhutiya Road. The coordinates of Shivalaya in the middle of the two villages are: 29.48N, 79.25E. Pan used to buzz with activity till some 30 years back. Migration started even before but the critical mass was lost in late years of 29th century. Now there are less than a dozen people living in the two villages that constitute Pan. Though people have left, those who had spent a part of their life in Pan have memories of these calm, content times etched in their memories.
